So I thought I’d use this time to talk about what I did this past President’s Day weekend. I built my author website. Not just any website, my ideal website. I hated my website before. It was boring, static, and just plain lame. So I decided to change it. If you’ve read my previous posts, you know how pressed for time I am. Thus, it was important for me to do this quickly and efficiently.
After looking at other author websites, I took notes on what I wanted and didn’t want. I looked at some templates and came up with a plan for how I wanted my website. When I described my idea to a web designer I know, he said it would cost me $400. Even though I am a very cheap person, I have a new motto for 2010 and I realize that I deserve to invest in myself. I am actually taking money out of my tax refund for the year and investing it in promoting myself. I have a professional building an interactive website for my Priscilla the Great series of books. But since I’m already paying for that website, I didn’t want to have to fork over money for another site. So I decided to go it alone.
The internet is a big, beautiful bundle of knowledge. Through research, I found the exact programs I needed to install on my computer in order to design the website of my dreams. (By the way, I used free trials of these programs so I wouldn’t have to pay.) Not only that, but I found video tutorials on how to use Adobe Dreamweaver, Photoshop, and Fireworks for web design. I literally spent upwards of 30 hours pouring myself over my computer and these tutorials while building my website through trial and error.
Finally, Tuesday morning, I was able to go live. Is it perfect? No, I still have a bit more coding to do and there’s some crazy thing I have to do to make it compatible for all flash players. I still have more research to do on that. Some people don’t like the music it plays, so I need to get rid of it. And the contact page doesn’t work. While it’s not perfect, I am very happy with it and it’s much better than what I had before. My website may very well be people’s first introduction to me and I want to make a good first impression.
So if you’re not happy with your website, do something about it. There are lots of aids available to you over the internet. You have no idea what you’re capable of until you try. Oh, by the way, check out my site:
