Have you ever wondered what to do with that first novel you wrote and stuck in a drawer? Early writing attempts are often well-written but just not quite good enough to attract an agent or publisher. Do you toss them in the trash after all that hard work? I don’t think so.
Some writers turn to self publishing print sites like CreateSpace or Lulu and those are great if you want a print book. But if you aren’t interested in a print book or if you want to test the water with your writing, a fun alternative is an eBook.
But isn’t creating an eBook hard to do? Nope.
Smashwords is the new online e-book alternative for self-publishers. You design a free cover, write a little book summary, and set your book cost. All you need to do then is format your book and load it up. If you load it wrong, Smashwords emails you and says try again. I love this, you can’t screw up. And don’t worry there are detailed instructions on formatting.
Why Smashwords? It’s my favorite e-publisher because it makes your book readable on Sony Reader, Kindle, regular computers and soon it’ll convert to iPad availability. I love this. This means your friends without a Kindle or an e-Reader can still read your book.
This multi-platform approach gives you the broadest base to hit the most e-readers.
I also love that Smashwords gives you price control. If you want your book to be free, you can make it free. If you want it to be a hundred dollars (I wouldn’t do that but you could) then its one hundred dollars and they get a small percentage.
I do suggest that you also load the book up the separate Amazon free book loader for Kindle. This way it’ll be sure to show up on Amazon book searches.
Smashwords makes it compatible with Kindle but it doesn’t automatically load it on the Amazon search engine. They are working on this for the future. By creating a Smashwords eBook and loading a free Kindle version, you get the most bang for your buck, search-able and multi-platform.
Plus, you can have your eBook up and running in less than an afternoon on Smashwords. Quick and easy, that’s how I want it. Hah.
This Smashwords eBook can be the one you use on your professional site and your book site as your free ‘gimme’ book that gives writers a taste of your work. Don’t have a ‘spare’ novel? Then do a collection of your short stories.
Smashwords lets you create the bait to hook readers so that when you are ready to traditionally publish your new novel, you’ve already started building a reader base.
Check it out at the http://www.smashwords.com website.
If you want to read one of the books on the site, check out ‘Mortal Ghost’ in the free books. It’s rather good. I don’t suggest you use your agent ready book on Smashwords but why not put those starter books to good use?
